Marketing and Dating. Both are fun, right?! Believe it or not the two are a lot alike. When a person is dating they are actually in the marketing business…. it sounds cheesy but it is true. Before you laugh at me and stop reading please hear me out! Let me explain how the two are soooooo closely related.
Go to person you are looking for. When you are interested in dating you will likely hang out in places where there are other single people.The single person likely won’t hang out at romantic dim lit restaurants or hang out with a married couple all the time. They will hang out in places where the type of partner they’d like will also hang out. It is the same thing for your business. If you are trying to attract a certain type of client you will need to hang out in all the places that the potential client will hang out.If you want a high caliber client you will need to hang out where the high caliber client will hang out. If you want a mom as a client you will need to be where the ideal mom you are in search of will be. You will attract them if you are in the place they are. Often you have to go to them so that they will know that you exist.
2. Perception is reality. “Looking good has nothing to do with my great work”, “Only God can judge me”…blah,blah,blah. The point of the matter is that perception IS the reality for most people! If someone is going out trying to catch the eye of that great single man/woman they must look their best. I doubt that someone would go to a great hang out spot full of amazing single people dressed in raggedy clothing and dirty hair. Well I hope they wouldn’t… lol. The same goes for marketing your business. When you market your business it (and YOU) need to look FAB! You have about 3 seconds to make a good impression. Remember if you nor your marketing material, website, etc look the part that great guy nor that great customer will give you the attention you want.
3. Authenticity. Never would a single person want to meet an eligible person and learn that who they posed to be is not who they really are. I know, I know..it happens ALL the time! lol Falling for the good ole okey doke! The same thing goes for your business. Show people who you really are and what you are really about. If your brand promises high quality work be sure to provide just what you have promised. Be yourself. Do not try to be like the “competitor”. If that eligible person does not like you and doesn’t wish to date you….who cares! If that potential client does not like you and what you offer…who cares! The right person is out there and is looking for someone just like YOU!
4. Build strong friendships. Everyone knows that the best romantic relationships are those that have a foundation in friendship. Before anyone can go to the next level with that special someone they want to get to know them and want to trust them with their precious heart. Your marketing campaign for your business and interaction with potential clients should help you develop the know, like and trust factor. Potential clients want to know you, like you and trust you before they give you a dime of their hard earned money just like the single person and their heart.
5. It’s a number’s game. Research suggests that you get at least 1,000 new eyes/leads on your product/ services to get ONE sale. That’s lots of prospects to get one deal, right? Think about how many dates you have to go on to find “the one”. You may have kissed lots of frogs, but in the end it will all be worth it.
Do you see how dating can teach you lots about business and vice versa? The parallels are endless. Successful entrepreneurs as well as those in happy relationship/marriages all understand the importance of each and every one of these steps.
